Yamadori

Yamadori refers to a tree collected from its natural growing site, such as a mountainside, cliff face or exposed ridge, rather than grown from seed or bought as nursery stock. Trees that survive in harsh, wild conditions often develop the kind of thick, weathered, characterful trunks that would take many decades to replicate by cultivating a seedling under normal garden conditions.

Collecting yamadori is demanding and risky, since a wild tree has an established but often sparse root system adapted to its native soil, and it can take a full season or more of careful aftercare in a recovery box before the tree is stable enough for further work. Many collected trees are lost in the first year or two if collection or aftercare goes wrong.

Because of the skill, timing and often legal permission required to collect responsibly, most hobbyists get their first experience with dramatic, aged trunks through pre-bonsai or nursery stock instead of collecting yamadori themselves. Buying from an experienced collector who has already stabilized a tree past its first recovery period is a lower-risk way to own yamadori material.
