Pre-bonsai

Pre-bonsai is a tree, usually grown in a nursery field or large container, that already has a thick, tapered trunk with some age and character but has not yet been styled, wired or planted into a bonsai pot. Buying pre-bonsai skips the slowest part of bonsai development, since building trunk thickness from a seedling can take a decade or more.

Good pre-bonsai stock is chosen for trunk movement, a usable nebari and branches positioned where a future design could use them, even if the current growth looks shaggy or overgrown. Growers often spend the first year or two after buying pre-bonsai just observing how the tree responds to its new pot and light before making major cuts.

The trade-off with pre-bonsai is cost and unpredictability, since a tree with excellent trunk character might still have a poor root spread or an awkward branch structure that limits the final design. Inspecting the nebari and lower trunk in person or in detailed photos before buying avoids paying a premium for a trunk that turns out to have a hidden flaw.
