One-third rule
The one-third rule is a rough guideline that wire diameter should be about a third of the branch it is bending.
The one-third rule is a starting guideline bonsai growers use to pick wire thickness relative to the branch being wired. Wire that measures roughly a third of the branch diameter usually has enough strength to hold a bend in place without being so thick that it is difficult to apply cleanly or looks heavy against a thin branch.
This is a guideline rather than a fixed formula, since wood hardness, species and how sharp a bend is needed all change how much holding power is required. A stiff, resistant branch on a mature conifer may need wire closer to the branch's own thickness, while a soft, flexible shoot on a young deciduous tree can often be shaped with noticeably thinner wire than the rule suggests.
New growers often reach for wire that is too thin because it seems less likely to damage the branch, then find it springs back out of position within days. Starting with the one-third estimate and adjusting after testing how the branch responds to a light bend is a more reliable approach than guessing purely by eye.
